Germany’s International Responsibility and its Path to Leadership

Fundamental upheavals are shaking the pillars of the international liberal order. The combined challenges of multipolarity, rising unilateralism, a vacuum of international leadership and global risks and threats have come together in a perfect storm. While calls are growing for greater German engagement and leadership in the world, the country at the heart of Europe must rethink its historical sense of responsibility and develop a strategy to make the most of its political, diplomatic and economic strengths. Is Germany’s political practice of leading in partnership a viable strategy for engagement in a changing world order?
